According to research firm IDC, business telecommuting continues to grow. In fact, analysts predict a net increase of roughly 180,000 new telecommuters annually from 2011 to 2015.
What is most interesting about telecommuting’s popularity – which was further underscored by the IDC study – is the technological implications of this trend. IDC says that telecommuters will essentially be on the cutting edge of new technologies.
The report suggests, for example, that by the end of 2015, nearly 75 percent of networked home office households will be wireless. In addition, the number of notebook-owning telecommuters will increase by five percent.
These trends have two immediate implications for the business itself: one, to ensure that these additional expenses to do become a drag on the bottom line, and two, to not let these expenses overshadow the need for hoteling software to effectively accommodate remote users when they occasionally work in the company’s main office.
