One of the drawbacks of telecommuting is the obvious fact that workers are physically removed from their colleagues. As such, they are disproportionately reliant on e-mail, wireless technologies, Voice-over IP, and telephone calls to connect with colleagues in the home office.
Telecommuters also frequently travel in different time zones, making it even more difficult to reach out to their in-office co-workers. And when a remote worker returns from the road, it can be difficult to effectively arrange a smooth transition to the home office.
Traditionally, a remote worker will call the home office and speak to an administrative assistant or supervisor, alerting them of their arrival. They must also contact their assistant, a colleague, or Operations to secure a room. Lastly, they may need to contact IT to secure a computer.
The remote worker may reach out to these parties via the telephone or e-mail, and because of this, the process is rarely seamless. E-mails get lost, phone messages are forgotten, and people simply forget.
Only with room booking software, where the worker themselves can reserve a room, enter their schedule, and request hardware or software needs, the worker themselves can access, can these manual steps be eliminated.
